While adult teeth are meant to last a lifetime, there are circumstances that may require the removal of a tooth. There may be gum disease causing compromised support for a tooth, major tooth decay that causes a tooth to be unrestorable, or a fracture that extends below the gum line which cannot be repaired. Sometimes teeth are extracted for orthodontic purposes, or if the tooth can adversely affect other teeth or pose a risk of infection.
You have likely heard the term “getting a tooth pulled.” This is an unfortunate term, since we do not actually pull teeth out to remove them. This could actually cause damage to surrounding teeth, bone and gums. If a tooth requires extraction, we first numb the area surrounding it, and then we luxate it, or move the tooth from side to side, until it is loose enough to be lifted out. Occasionally we will cut the tooth into two or more pieces in order to safely remove it.
After a tooth is removed, your dentist will discuss with you whether it should be replaced or not. Some teeth are important for aesthetics or function. For example, the first molar tooth is significant for chewing, so failing to replace it could result in other teeth drifting into the open space, or an unbalanced bite. Other teeth however, like wisdom teeth, are rarely replaced. To ensure that you know exactly what to expect, the issue of whether a tooth should be replaced will be discussed with you prior to removal.
